College major

Your college major is the subject you choose to specialize in during your undergraduate study. Based on this option, the academic discipline that will occupy the major portion of your academic time and energy is decided upon. On successfully completion of the major University requirements, you will get a bachelor's degree. Your major gives you the opportunity to improve your intellectual skills, prove your potential at absorbing subjects from the nitty-gritties, right up to advanced levels. For this reason what you choose to study is critical.

When you select a major, you get into a contract with a college to complete a prescribed course of study.  This usually comprises general education requirements plus academic major requirements. General education requirements are University requirements. The college curriculum will, hence, include not just courses in the major field of study, but coursework could also consist of general education and elective courses. This could include courses that you pick from a broad range of options from both within and outside the major. The percentage of general education courses varies vastly, compared to major courses. However, this also depends upon the school and the major, but almost all institutions would want some general education courses done.

Admission Process

All colleges have its own specific eligibility criteria that you have to fulfill prior to filling in the application form for their program. This consists of having to present your test scores of SAT, GRE, GMAT, TOEFL. This, of course, varies with the degree you are applying for. For example, if you are applying for a Bachelor’s degree, your SAT test scores will be required. If you are taking up a graduate or post graduate degree, GRE and TOEFL will be a must. For those applying to business schools, GMAT and TOEFL test scores are a required.
